Is there stuff to do aside from Skiing? Dag on skippy there is. From world class mountain biking in the summer, year round hiking, fly fishing, rails to trails, trains, and that is just the start. Just ask.
Hiking? Everywhere and for as long and far as you would like, the choices come down to taste. I can make some recommendations based upon your desired level. Tea Creek, Cranberry, Dolly Sods, and of course Snowshoe backcountry are notable stops.
Do you guys mountain bike up there? We're the best ski resort in the region per our vertical, trail length, and stunning snow making ability, but we are a world class down hill facility and a newly minted IMBA Silver destination. We have it all from flat to the track ran in the 2019 UCI World Cup finale which is considered by many to be the best bike race in history. The UCI is holding the same race here in 2021, so yeah, we do that up here.
How far to the slopes? About 10 minutes for me using the back entrance, the distance is 4.5 miles. There are 3 ski areas though so it varies. The distance is about bang for the buck. Most of my guests are looking for a nice place that is affordable, especially on food options near the house and of course the full kitchens. Parking is right out front, no loading in and out with long walks.
How are the roads? Usually very good but only so much can be done, private lots tend to have a snow pack surface during snow events.
Can I drive in 2 wheel drive? I don't know, I can most of the time. Grab a pair of cables and practice putting them before leaving if is a concern. Front wheel drive beats rear wheel drive, especially with trucks. AWD or 4WD is a plus but not usually a must however plan for the worst, prep for the best. Your concept of snowy roads and walk ways will likely change if you are not used to living in a snowy area. We are a micro climate and it can be snowing hard here and nothing just a handful of miles away.
Can you get us discounts? Not on lift tickets, but I can direct you to deals as they appear. I do provide discounts for the best local rental and retail shops.
Can my dog come? I allow some pets to come but only on direct rentals, very few ad sites. The conditions come down to crating when alone and/or deposits. I allowed pets for years and truthfully it is difficult to accommodate but it is not a firm no. The dog on the home page is mine. We are one of the few HOA's that allow renters to bring them. None are allowed without express consent.
Do I have to report the number in my party? Yep. No additional guests without express consent.
Are the bugs bad? Nope
How are the temps? Really cold in the winter, and an average of 78 day time high in the summer. Always keep a hoody handy even in the warmer months.
Are there bears? Yes, but they don't want anything to do with people. There is pretty much every animal this part of he country has to offer in abundance. The owls calling each other at night is my personal favorite.
Can we river raft/kayak from there? The Greenbrier and Shavers Fork have some mellow offerings nearby. To step it up to the Gauley and New River it is a day trip from here. The drive along the Highland Parkway or Williams River Road is quite scenic.
